The BSIA Remembers BSIA Fellow Malcolm McCulloch

Malcolm McCulloch

The School community was saddened to hear of the recent passing of Malcolm McCulloch, one of its valued BSIA Fellows associated with the STEM for Global Resilience Research Cluster. Professor McCulloch was a pioneering engineer, entrepreneur, teacher and advocate for sustainable energy. He believed that climate change and social inequity were the big challenges facing our civilization on its path to a sustainable future. Malcolm’s research focused on making sustainable energy accessible in the developing world and on integrating renewable power generation into existing electricity networks. Malcolm was a tireless proponent and contributor the the ‘Global Change Initiative – Affordable Energy for Humanity’ founded by Professor Jatin Nathwani at University of Waterloo in co-operation with Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT, Germany). His work combined academic excellence with real-world impact: he published more than 140 papers, held over 25 patents, and founded four commercial and two not-for-profit spin-out organizations. His keen insights on the insurmountable challenges of bringing electricity services to the most disadvantaged and the poor in dispersed communities distant from the grid in the Global South will be his enduring legacy. Malcolm will be fondly remembered by friends and colleagues at the Balsillie School of International Affairs.

The BSIA is closed Monday, January 26th due to severe weather and local travel conditions.
