PhD in Global Governance

Pegah Jamalof (PJ) is a PhD candidate in Global Governance. Her research examines the limits of global rule-making in the governance of social media platforms, with a particular focus on the United Nations Global Digital Compact, the influence of the European Union’s GDPR and DSA, and the role of Big Tech in shaping human rights outcomes. Her work engages questions of multistakeholder governance, the corporate accountability, and the fragmentation of regulatory authority across international institutions. She employs qualitative methodologies to assess how governance frameworks are developed, interpreted, and implemented in practice. She is supervised by Alistair Edgar.
Alongside her doctoral research, PJ works with the Graduate Student Association at Wilfrid Laurier University as Coordinator of Government and Stakeholder Relations, where she engages with municipal and provincial actors and contributes to policy development across a range of student and community-focused issues. In this role, she also works as a Research Assistant, supporting applied research initiatives including projects on food insecurity in the Waterloo region. Her broader research experience includes work on industrial policy and international political economy, as well as contributions to sexual violence prevention policy through the Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region.
PJ has presented her research in both academic and policy-oriented settings, including ISA, and at conferences focused on digital regulation and public policy. Her work reflects a continued engagement with interdisciplinary audiences across global governance, media, and technology.
She previously served as President and CEO of a small-medium sized non-profit corporation and worked closely with stakeholders on institutional governance and policy. She also served as Vice-President of Government and Stakeholder Relations and held positions on both the University Senate and Board of Governors.
Beyond her academic and professional work, PJ is a marathon runner. She has used this platform to support awareness and fundraising efforts addressing gender-based and intimate partner violence, with a particular focus on drug-facilitated sexual assault.
