Fintech Innovations: Digital Remittances and Financial Inclusion in Southern Africa

August 12 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

Financial Technology (FinTech) is rapidly reshaping the remittance landscape in Southern Africa by enabling digital transfers and mobile money services that are speedy, efficient, secure, accessible and importantly, more affordable than conventional banking systems. This presentation critically examines the benefits and drawbacks associated with fintech and digital remittances within the broader framework of financial inclusion. Drawing on a case study from one of the Southern African vibrant routes, particularly the South Africa–Zimbabwe migration and remittance corridor. This presentation highlights how digital and mobile-based fintech solutions are extending financial technology services, such as cross-border remittances (cash and in-kind, including food), digital transactions, mobile money transfers and artificial intelligence (AI), to unbanked and marginalised populations. The case study highlights the potential of fintech to enhance economic resilience and support adaptation strategies, particularly among migrant communities and beneficiaries of remittances. The talk argues that when fintech innovations and digital technologies are based on inclusive and effectively regulated financial ecosystems, they can promote policies that are equitable and sustainable, thereby enhancing financial inclusion strategies throughout the region.
