BSIA PhD student recognized by Carbon Removal Canada as one of six ‘Notable Women’ working in carbon removal

Congratulations to BSIA PhD student Stephanie Rose Cortinovis, who was recently recognized by Carbon Removal Canada as one of six ‘Notable Women’ working in carbon removal in Canada.

Stephanie was acknowledged for her contributions to marine carbon removal and her participation in a series of National Science Foundation workshops on climate interventions at the Earth Systems Governance Forum. Additionally, she has been accepted as a discussion leader and participant at the Gordon Research Conference on Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage, where she plans to present on direct air capture and marine carbon removal.

Recent data from a Government of Canada publication highlights that women hold only 24% of jobs in the energy sector. In response, Carbon Removal Canada aims to spotlight Canadian women who have made notable advancements in carbon removal, driving research and innovation in 2024-25, while providing essential policy input.

Founded in 2023, Carbon Removal Canada is an independent policy initiative focused on rapidly and responsibly scaling carbon removal solutions necessary to meet Canada’s climate goals and catalyze future net-negative emissions. The organization collaborates with governments, local communities, Indigenous groups, innovators, advocacy organizations, and companies to promote responsible carbon removal solutions. Its mission includes educating stakeholders on how these solutions can effectively reduce CO₂ in the atmosphere while emphasizing community well-being and social equity.
