Ryan Umphrey is a current graduate student in the Master of International Public Policy program at Balsillie School of International Affairs. Before attending the Balsillie School, Ryan graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University, earning an Honours Bachelor of Arts with a major in Political Science, a minor in North American Studies, and an International Policy Option.
During his last year of undergraduate study, Ryan was privileged to be involved in the Research Specialization program. During this time, Ryan researched the impact of Chinese Belt and Road Initiative loans and economic investment on African states with varied levels of economic and social development.
Beyond academics, Ryan has spent time in Kenya and India, gaining valuable experience through volunteering, learning about the UN food systems, and developing a passion for advocacy through policy. These experiences led to Ryan’s interest in African politics and food security, with a focus on understanding how political environments, economic relations, and policy decisions alter the food security landscape. With emphasis placed on analyzing the role of global institutions such as the United Nations and foreign states.
During his time in the MIPP program, Ryan aims to enhance his skills in policy writing, research, and in his areas of specialization, International Economic Relations and Human Security. While also hoping to learn from his chosen research clusters, The Africa Forum, and Global Political Economy/WatPEG.
Upon completion of the MIPP program, Ryan aspires to apply his academic interests to a career at the intersection of food security, policy development, and global institutions.
