Hannah Barbero

Master of International Public Policy

Hannah Barbero is a student at the Balsillie School of International Affairs in the Master of International Public Policy program. She graduated from Simon Fraser University (SFU) in 2020, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies with a concentration in economics, development, and environmental issues. During her studies, Hannah spent four months studying environmental policy and international trade at the University of Bath in the United Kingdom.

Since graduating in 2020, Hannah has worked for Environment and Climate Change Canada in policy and program development for the Environmental Damages Fund program. This experience has provided her with insight on the everyday functions of the federal government, including navigating bureaucracy, writing effective policies, and connecting with the Canadian public.

Hannah’s areas of interest include environmental and climate change policy, conflict and security (specifically humanitarian intervention), food (in)security, and the actions and limitations of global institutions, including the United Nations.

Following the completion of the MIPP program, Hannah aspires to serve at the intersection of environment and climate policy and human security, working for an organization that can create meaningful change for everyday Canadians and the rest of the world. With her five years of experience working for the Government of Canada coupled with the comprehensive education provided by the BSIA, Hannah envisions being ready to approach complex policy-making arenas in the public and/or private sector after graduating.
