Countries across Africa are rapidly transitioning from rural to urban societies. The challenge of building inclusive and sustainable cities in the context of rapid urbanization hinges on addressing urban food security challenges. Creating food secure cities and resilient urban food systems is key to promoting health, prosperity, equity, and ecological sustainability. The expansion of Africa’s urban population is taking place largely in secondary cities, which is a real knowledge gap in policy-oriented academic research. A recently published open access book features diverse case studies that shed light on broad concepts including governance, sustainability, health, economic development, informality and inclusivity. Please join us for brief presentations and Q & A with the editors and four contributing authors.
Co-editors Liam Riley and Jonathan Crush will provide an overview of the context of the book and the wider trends shaping urban food systems in African secondary cities. Dan Tevera will present his chapter, “Secondary Cities and Urban Agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa.” Ndeyapo Nickanor will present her chapter, “Food Insecurity, Food Sourcing and Food Coping Strategies in the O-O-O Urban Corridor, Namibia .” Andrea Brown will present her chapter, “Co-Productive Urban Planning: Protecting and Expanding Food Security in Uganda’s Secondary Cities.” Alexander Fomin Legwegoh will present his chapter, “Hunger in an Agricultural City: Exploring Vulnerability in Dschang, Cameroon.” The presentations will be followed by a Q & A session.
