Shawn Donnelly is a Canadian political economist, and specialize in economic policy-making, covering both detailed comparative analysis and intergovernmental cooperation. He sits on the editorial boards of Politics and Governance, and Agenda Publisher’s book series on comparative political economy. Much of his research focus is on Europe, with additional attention to global institutions and North America (Canada and the US). Within the last decade he has focused on how economic nationalism is manifested in the US and elsewhere, on power politics between countries seeking policy solutions and collective institutions despite disagreements, on how intergovernmental agreements on federal budgets can overcome material and ideological disputes, and most recently, on how countries engage in projects from industrial policy to digital sovereignty and national security projects to reduce their dependence on American and Chinese resources.
During his time at Balsillie, he will be running three projects. One is a book on transatlantic politics and technonationalism in the age of Trump. The second is on industrial policy and foreign affairs strategies of Canada, European and East Asian partners in the face of US confrontation. Part of this project is an edited special issue together with Jörg Broschek with Politics and Governance. The third is an ongoing edited volume on the politics of banking, finance and debt with Edward Elgar.
