Rielle Miller is a graduate candidate in the Master of Arts in Global Governance program at the Balsillie School of International Affairs. She completed her 4-Year Bachelor’s degree in Human Rights at the University of Winnipeg, minoring in Conflict Resolution Studies.
Throughout her undergraduate studies, Rielle developed a strong interest in the intersection of human rights and technology, with her research eventually focusing on the applications of Artificial Intelligence and how emerging technologies impact, threaten, and potentially violate existing rights standards. As part of her degree, she completed an international practicum in Bethlehem, Palestine, an experience that challenged her understanding of rights and deepened the sense of global citizenship and personal responsibility to uphold rights-based standards in the digital age. Her scholarship now centres on the applications of AI in conflict-affected regions and contemporary warfare zones.
Alongside her studies, Rielle worked closely with mentors at the University of Winnipeg as a teaching assistant, a co-coordinator for the Global College practicum, and a first-year student mentor. After graduation, she spent two years in the non-profit sector, coordinating refugee sponsorship within Canada’s federal resettlement framework. This work grounded her research in the lived realities of displacement and further illustrated the gap between policy and protection.
Rielle is particularly interested in the intersections of AI governance, conflict, and human rights, and is eager to bring this perspective to the interdisciplinary, policy-oriented environment at Balsillie.
