Milka Milicevic completed George Brown Polytechnic’s interdisciplinary Honours Bachelor of Food Studies program and graduated with Honours in 2026. In that program, she gained a comprehensive understanding of the complexities of contemporary food system issues, while also having the opportunity to critically examine food systems and their impact on society, health, and the environment. Previously a Market Researcher in the food and restaurant sectors, she is also a Holistic Nutritionist. Milka’s unique blend of strengths in food studies research, market research, and culinary arts places her in a distinct position to serve as a positive agent of change in food systems.
Her research interests centre on the global political economy of food systems, with a particular focus on how power dynamics, the global economy, corporate concentration, and international food governance spaces intersect to shape food systems, food security, social inequities, and environmental sustainability.
Milka has also received several great opportunities in recent years, including being a student notetaker at the Food Learning and Growing (FLOW) Partnership meetings – led by Dr. Alison Blay-Palmer, the UNESCO Chair on Food, Biodiversity and Sustainability Studies – and co-authoring a book chapter on teaching sustainable food consumption with Dr. Caitlin Scott, Professor of Food Studies at George Brown Polytechnic. She also had the opportunity to serve as a research assistant to Dr. Lori Stahlbrand on a project examining the development of sustainable regional food systems in Southern Ontario.
In addition to her academic achievements, Milka co-organized a campus-community food group assembly and helped launch the George Brown Food Coalition. Through this work, she has created meaningful opportunities for students and campus community members to engage with local food issues and take collective action. She hopes to be actively involved in campus community-focused initiatives at the Balsillie School of International Affairs as well.
While at Balsillie, Milka would like to use her time in the Global Governance program to delve into governance solutions to contemporary food system issues. She looks forward to collaborating with other scholars to address global food challenges related to food security and ecological sustainability.
