Matthew Sunil

Matthew Sunil is a Master of International Public Policy (MIPP) candidate at the Balsillie School of International Affairs, specializing in human security.

Raised between Norway and Canada, his international background shapes his interest in multilateral institutions and alliance management. He previously worked at the NATO Association of Canada, most recently as Senior Editor overseeing the Canadian Armed Forces and Security, Trade & Economy programs, where he supervised a team of Junior Research Fellows and Program Editors. In this role, he also moderated the association’s Diplomatic Speaker Series, including discussions with Canada’s Permanent Representative to NATO and the Ambassador of Norway.

He currently serves as a Research Assistant on BSIA’s Technology Governance Survey, examining AI policy across critical sectors in Canada. He previously held a Graduate Research Fellowship at BSIA, researching Canada’s strategic posture amid U.S.-China competition. In 2026, he was selected as a winner of Global Affairs Canada’s International Policy Ideas Challenge for a proposal on integrating climate security into NATO planning through Canada’s CCASCOE.

Matthew holds a Graduate Certificate in Project Management from George Brown College and a BA (Honours) in Political Science from McMaster University. His professional experience includes frontline community work in Hamilton and Stavanger.

He also represents BSIA students as Faculty Representative to the Wilfrid Laurier University Graduate Students’ Association, contributing to academic governance and student advocacy.

He will begin as a Programme (Minerals) Fellow with UNDP Malawi in September 2026, supporting mineral sector governance and extractive industry reform.
