Kian Khosravi is a Master of International Public Policy (MIPP) student at the Balsillie School of International Affairs having completed his undergraduate degree at Wilfrid Laurier University, graduating with a major in Political Science and a concentration in French. His academic training has provided him with a strong grounding in international relations theory as well as practical approaches to diplomacy, with his coursework and research exploring statecraft, conflict, and the evolution of political systems.
At Laurier, Kian was guided by distinguished professors of international relations and foreign diplomacy such as Dr. Dejan Guzina, Dr. Evren Altinkas, and Dr. Zheger Hassan, each of whom introduced him to distinct regional perspectives and theoretical traditions. Under their mentorship, he developed a comparative outlook on international affairs that spanned global institutions, post-conflict societies, and contemporary security challenges. He also participated in panels hosted by the Balsillie School, including research discussions on political systems and the complex relationship between Serbia and Kosovo, which further refined his understanding of how international relations theories intersect with on-the-ground realities. His written work has explored both classical and modern theories of diplomacy, analyzing the ways states navigate conflict, cooperation, and foreign engagement.
Kian has also built experience beyond the classroom through active involvement in grassroots politics. He has worked with several political parties in Canada, focusing on volunteer coordination and canvassing strategy. His most notable contributions came through his work with the Green Party of Ontario during the 2022 and 2023 election cycles. Working closely with MPP Aislinn Clancy and party leader Mike Schreiner, Kian helped drive two successful electoral campaigns by organizing volunteers, shaping canvassing tactics, and connecting local community issues to broader policy platforms. These victories reinforced his conviction that effective political strategy requires both theoretical insight and direct engagement with citizens.
His interest in politics is not limited to Canadian contexts. Deeply intrigued by political movements abroad, Kian has sought to learn directly from the perspectives of citizens in other countries. During his travels in the Balkans, he attended political protests in Serbia and Turkey, engaging with locals to understand their grievances, demands, and hopes for reform. These experiences underscored his belief that the study of international relations
must be grounded in both theory and the lived realities of people affected by state policy, conflict, and social mobilization.
Kian’s professional ambitions are centered on contributing to Canada’s role in global diplomacy. Upon completing his master’s degree, he hopes to join Global Affairs Canada, where he can apply his academic training, political experience, and international outlook to advance Canada’s foreign policy priorities. Whether in diplomacy, policy analysis, or international negotiation, his goal is to help shape constructive, forward-looking approaches to global challenges.
By combining rigorous academic study, hands-on political organizing, and first-hand engagement with international movements, Kian has developed a multifaceted perspective on global affairs. His trajectory reflects not only a deep intellectual interest in the history and theory of international relations but also a practical commitment to diplomacy and public service.
