Emily Kalmin

Master of Arts in Global Governance

Emily Kalmin is a current student in the Master of Arts in Global Governance at the Balsillie School of International Affairs. She completed an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, with a specialization in Global Citizenship and a minor in Social Problems, Policy and the Law, at McMaster University in 2026. Seeking to better understand how policy is experienced by individuals and implemented within organizations, she also pursued a Certificate in Disability Management through the McMaster–Mohawk partnership.

Emily’s research explores the intersection of artificial intelligence, climate governance, accessibility, and global public policy. She has a particular interest in how emerging technologies can be used to address complex global challenges while improving people’s everyday lives. Her undergraduate thesis, Artificial Intelligence and Climate Change: Emerging Implications and Challenges, examines how rapidly evolving technologies are reshaping environmental governance and international policy. Through this work, she has become increasingly interested in how innovation can be balanced with accountability, equity, and human rights. She enjoys bringing together ideas from political science, environmental studies, economics, and technology, believing that the strongest solutions emerge when diverse perspectives and disciplines come together.

Outside of the classroom, Emily enjoys spending time outdoors and appreciating nature. Taking every opportunity to travel, she values experiencing new places, learning about different cultures, and trying new things. She firmly believes that successful engagement and policy implementation begins with listening, collaboration, and valuing the unique communities it is intended to serve.

During her time at BSIA, Emily looks forward to learning alongside diverse scholars, exploring interdisciplinary approaches to global governance, and contributing to research that creates meaningful and lasting impact.
