Dorcas Boakye Acheampong, a Master of Development Practice (MDP) student at the Balsillie School of International Affairs, is deeply passionate about how finance can be used as a force to drive rural development, reduce poverty, and promote environmental sustainability.
Her MBA in finance research examined the impact of Rural and Community Banks on the socio-economic development of rural communities in Ghana, uncovering how these financial institutions, created initially to support the rural poor, are increasingly shifting toward urban and salaried clients. Amidst these shifting interests of Rural and Community Banks, the research revealed that they continue to enhance the socio-economic development of rural dwellers who utilise their financial services. Drawing on extensive professional experience in rural banking operations, Dorcas has developed a deep understanding of how finance can shape community development and build resilience.
Dorcas aspires to advance sustainable development through innovative financial solutions and green financing mechanisms that empower rural communities and protect natural ecosystems. She aims to contribute to global efforts that build climate-resilient, equitable economies — systems that truly work for both people and the planet.
