In her talk, “Pathways to a Sustainable World” Diana Fox Carney traces how sustainability shifted from being dismissed in boardrooms to becoming a mainstream concern for companies and governments alike. Ms. Fox Carney frames 2025 as a turning point, with businesses moving away from ambitious pledges toward more realistic assessments aligned to credible pathways – which are themselves being tested in the face of growing political pressure from the US. At the same time, escalating climate change impacts make clear there is no pause button on the physical realities we face. Together these factors are profoundly shifting the language of climate dialogue, militating towards a more pragmatic and community-centred approach that places a greater emphasis on the resilience, health and cost benefits of climate action, even as issues of speed and scale remain pressing.
A ‘fireside chat’ with Ms. Carney and moderator Sarah Burch will follow the talk. Professor Burch is the Canada Research Chair in Sustainability Governance and Innovation and Professor, Geography and Environmental Management at the University of Waterloo and Balsillie School.

Diana Fox Carney is an adviser to companies and investors that are seeking opportunities in the transition to a greener, more nature positive economy.
With a background in strategy consulting, natural resource management and climate policy, she has worked with firms and not-for-profit organisations in Africa, Europe and North America. She is a Fellow of the Balsillie School of International Affairs.
