Migration offers hope and opportunity for millions of women and girls worldwide, especially those fleeing entrenched gender inequalities, violence, and climate-driven crises. Yet, despite their resilience and vital contributions, migrant women—particularly those who are racialized or have diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions and sex characteristics (SOGIESC)—continue to face systemic barriers at every stage of migration. From limited access to safe migration pathways and legal protections to exploitation in informal labor sectors and exclusion from healthcare and social services, their rights and dignity are often undermined.
This virtual event will bring together governments, UN agencies, civil society, feminist movements, and migrant-led organizations to confront these challenges head-on. At a time of rising anti-gender and anti-migrant rhetoric, it will serve as a platform to elevate the voices and leadership of migrant women and migrants with diverse SOGIESC, surface bold ideas, and drive collective action toward gender-responsive migration governance rooted in human rights, inclusion, and justice.
This event is organized by Canada, Colombia, Deutsche Gesellschaft fĂĽr Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Gender+ Migration Hub, International Migration Research Centre, International Detention Coalition (IDC) Switzerland, UN Women, and Women in Migration Network (WIMN).
