The BSIA recently gathered to celebrate the retirements of Dr. Andrew Cooper and Dr. David Welch, two distinguished scholars who have had a lasting impact on the School and the broader field of international affairs.
Throughout their careers, they have shaped the BSIA by their scholarship, teaching, mentorship, and leadership, while helping to foster the strong intellectual and collegial community that defines the School. Although their areas of expertise are distinct, both have demonstrated a deep commitment to fostering a community where difficult questions can be explored and new perspectives can flourish.
Dr. Cooper’s influential work on diplomacy, global governance, middle powers, and Canadian foreign policy, along with his work with the School’s Global Governance programs, has shaped generations of students and scholars.
Dr. Welch has provided important academic and program leadership as Interim Director of the BSIA, Director of the MAGG, and co-director of the PhD in Global Governance, while his scholarship and teaching have advanced critical conversations around international relations and security.
The Balsillie School is grateful for their many years of service, leadership, mentorship, and friendship. We wish Andrew and David a very happy retirement and all the best in this next chapter.
