The Honourable David Collenette was Minister of Transport on September 11th, 2001. He dealt with the arbitrary closure of American airspace by the US government following four terrorist attacks weaponizing civilian passenger aircraft. Hundreds of planes and thousands of passengers were diverted to Canadian airports in Atlantic Canada where local residents opened their hearts and homes to passengers and airline crews. We will hear his story 12.00- 1.30pm on November 4th.
About the Speaker
Hon. David Collenette is a distinguished public servant whose career spans over four decades in politics, academia, and international democratic development. Born in London, England, and raised in Toronto, he served in Parliament for more than 20 years, holding key cabinet positions under three prime ministers, including Minister of National Defence, Transport, and Veterans Affairs. He played a pivotal role in constitutional reform, multicultural policy, transportation modernization, and Canada’s response to 9/11. Beyond politics, Collenette contributed to global democratic initiatives, advised on high-speed rail, and supported cultural and infrastructure development in Toronto. He remains active in academia, public policy, and volunteer leadership, notably with the NATO Association of Canada and Harbourfront Corporation, and is recognized for his bilingualism and commitment to national unity, racial equality, and public service.
