Sophie Greco

PhD in Global Governance

Sophie Greco is a PhD student at the BSIA through Wilfrid Laurier University, specializing in Global Governance with a focus on Conflict and Human Rights. Her doctoral research hopes to explore the capacity of Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) programs in Latin America to address and support gender development for women in post-conflict settings.

Sophie’s academic foundations include an MA in Criminology and Criminal Justice Policy from the University of Guelph (with distinction), where she focused largely on the overrepresentation of Indigenous women in the Canadian justice system as further perpetuated by the state’s implementation of genocidal carceralities. Sophie also holds an Honors Bachelor of Arts from the University of Western Ontario, specializing in Criminology with an additional Major in Global Justice. During her undergraduate career, she led a community-engaged learning project, which involved developing policy recommendations for Community Living London based on grounded sociological theory. Sophie’s work on intersectionality in Social Movements has been published in The Sociological Imagination, and she has presented at the Engage Conference: Building for a Diverse Future on Sex-work in Canada regarding current policy approaches and recommendations for Federalist Decriminalization.

More notably, Sophie’s academic experience includes serving as Graduate Research Assistants and Graduate Teaching Assistants. At the University of Guelph, she contributed to studies on municipal governance regarding ACOCs, as well as on a project reviewing criminal appeal decisions in Canada. At the BSIA she is assisting her supervisor on work regarding the Protection of Civilians. Sophie’s related professional experience includes her role as a Client Feedback Facilitator at the Canadian Mental Health Association, where she managed client relationships and data collection processes for the creation of policy recommendations.

As she progresses in her doctoral studies, Sophie is eager to learn from those around her, engage in new academic endeavours, and attempt to contribute to the vast field of International Affairs. Outside of academia, Sophie is an indoor plant enthusiast, an avid foodie/cook, and a (not so guilty) consumer of crime documentaries.
