Join us for an urgent discussion on “surveillance capitalism”, its threat to our information civilization, and how its trajectory undermines democratic norms and the centuries-long evolution of market capitalism.
The Balsillie School of International Affairs and the Centre for International Governance Innovation cordially invite you to a discussion on surveillance capitalism, featuring Professor Shoshana Zuboff (Professor Emerita, Harvard University and author) and Mr. Jim Balsillie (Canadian business leader and philanthropist). The discussion will offer perspectives on the concept of surveillance capitalism and its implications for an information civilization. The conversation will also raise issues concerning governance and public policy challenges in a marketplace of intangibles, where power is based on who controls and owns data and intellectual property. Offering both research and practitioner perspectives, Professor Zuboff and Mr. Balsillie will highlight ways in which surveillance capitalism challenges democratic norms and departs in key ways from the centuries-long evolution of market capitalism.
Moderated by Professor Ann Fitz-Gerald (Director, BSIA) and Dr. Paul Samson (President, CIGI).
A reception will follow this event (5:30-6:30pm) in the CIGI Campus foyer.
