Maddy Stimac is a Graduate student at the Balsillie School of International Affairs in the Master of Arts in Global Governance program. She recently graduated from Carleton University with an Honours Bachelor of Global and International Studies, specializing in Global Development, and minoring in Anthropology. Throughout her undergraduate experience, Maddy had the opportunity to explore a variety of disciplines including economics, international law, global politics, global development, and sustainability. Thus, Maddy has adopted an interdisciplinary approach to academics, which she will continue to utilize throughout her Master’s degree.

Maddy was also chosen to intern at the United Nations Association of Australia under the Human Rights Committee in the summer of 2022. Throughout this experience, Maddy moved to Sydney, Australia, where she worked collaboratively alongside experts in the field of development. In this role, she conducted research on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, analyzing their progress within Australia, and on a global scale. Throughout this experience, Maddy took a particular interest in the impact of climate change on the completion of the Sustainable Development Goals, which she hopes to examine throughout the duration of her Graduate studies.

Academically, Maddy is passionate about the environment, and the ways in which climate change disproportionately affects the most vulnerable members of society. She hopes to seek out solutions alongside her peers to aid communities impacted directly by climate change in terms of environmental degradation, but also in terms of displacement, resource depletion, and forced migration. She is excited to pursue graduate studies at the Balsillie School of International Affairs alongside like-minded individuals, and well-respected professors.
