Matthew Vucic is a graduate student at the Balsillie School of International Affairs, pursing a Master of Arts in Global Governance. He is a recent graduate from Wilfrid Laurier University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a minor in History.
His research interests include Global Political Economy (specifically in research surrounding North/East Asian states and trade regimes) and Global Institutions, Diplomacy, and Justice. In his last year of study, Matthew had the opportunity to join the Smart City TO team at the City of Toronto – the City’s policy shop focused on Digital Governance both internally and externally – extending his expertise into new governance frontiers surrounding Digital Twins, Asset Management, and Equitable Connectivity. In this role, Matthew authored several reports about emerging technologies and their governance implications, alongside completing internal policy work for City staff, and meeting with countless international parties in keeping with Toronto’s global commitments and treaties. In other roles, Matthew has worked on two federal (2019 and 2021) campaign teams as a policy aide and has had the privilege of owning and operating a successful small business with a diverse team of employees in 2019/2020.
In his graduate research, Matthew would like to continue investigating the ever-changing political economies of North/East Asia with renewed emphasis on Digital Governance and Intellectual Property rights, considering the challenges that these new frontiers present to both established and growing economies and governments. In this rapidly developing field, Matthew’s research will focus on how international organizations can be reinvigorated to adequately address new digital contexts and trends in the Global Economy.
Matthew is thrilled to be a part of the MAGG program and looks forward to engaging with professors, professionals, and his fellow colleagues over the next year. He expects this program to prepare him for a career in public policy at the federal level in Canada, or at the international level abroad.
