Kristen Csenkey is a PhD (ABD) in Global Governance at the Balsillie School of International Affairs in Canada. Her research focuses on cyber-security governance, emerging technologies, and socio-technical approaches to technology management. Csenkey is working to further develop the theoretical frameworks for cybersecurity governance and their practical application. Currently, she studies the governance of quantum technologies, connected, autonomous and shared electric vehicles, and sector-specific IoT with an emphasis on international cooperation. She publishes widely on these topics, including in the Canadian Naval Review and the Journal of Cybersecurity, with special attention to knowledge mobilization and policy applicability.
Csenkey holds numerous fellowship positions, including with the Research Institute for Sociotechnical Cyber Security (funded by the University of Bristol and the National Cyber Security Centre), the North American and Arctic Defence and Security Network (funded by Trent University and the Department of National Defence), and the Canadian Global Affairs Institute (CGAI). She has also served on numerous academic and professional advisory boards. Her research contributions are recognized through numerous awards, accolades, and scholarships. She was the recipient of the 2020 Women in Defence and Security Canada–CGAI Fellowship Award and was acknowledged as an Emerging Thought Leader in Digital Security by Women in International Security Canada in 2020.
She is often called to give expert advice to various federal government departments and parliamentary committees in Canada, including the Senate and the House of Commons Standing Committees. She is regularly invited to speak on multidisciplinary and multinational panels relating to cybersecurity, science and technology, national defence, and research security. Csenkey has appeared on national TV and radio, including on CBC News and CTV, and CBC Radio. Her work is featured in iPolitics and her many opinion pieces can be found in The Hill Times.
Currently, she is the Principal Investigator of three Department of National Defence-funded research projects, focusing on the topics of quantum computing, connected technologies in the Canadian aviation ecosystem, and cyber-resilient electric vehicles.
