Fatma Alsefaou is a recent graduate, holding an Honours Bachelor of Arts (co-op), majoring in Political Science and Business. Through her co-op experience, she had the opportunity to work in various industries within the private sector, holding positions in research, Change Management, and analytics.

Over a number of terms, Fatma served as the first Internal Director of the University of Waterloo’s student founded and run service, RAISE (Racial Advocacy for Inclusion, Solidarity, and Equity).

Beyond campus, Fatma is passionate about serving her local community. She volunteered as a program assistant with her local YMCA Immigrant and Employment Services. Fatma worked with recently arrived families and children. After receiving the RBC Future Launch Community Challenge grant, she served as director of the Safe Spaces Initiative (Coalition of Muslim Women), which aims to empower Muslim youth in the Kitchener-Waterloo region.

Through her graduate studies, she is interested in exploring Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa, looking at human rights and marginalized minorities within these regions. Within that context, Fatma is also interested in exploring mass atrocity crime prevention, humanitarian intervention, and impunity. She is particularly interested in examining these topics, considering the colonial legacy and history. Further, she would also like to analyze the politics of human rights and look into developing better systems to ensure the most vulnerable are protected.
