Master of Arts in Global Governance

Madelyn Rawlyk is a Master’s of Global Governance candidate at the Balsillie School of International Affairs. She graduated from Edwards School of Business, University of Saskatchewan in 2023 with a Bachelor of Commerce with a major in marketing achieving high honours and great distinction. Rawlyk is interested in researching global environmental governance by exploring corporate influence on climate policy and the intersection between communication and climate action.

In the final year of her undergraduate degree, Rawlyk completed an Honours Thesis under the supervision of Dr. Chelsea Willness that examined climate change communication the prairie provinces of Western Canada. A region with significant impact on Canada’s energy future, Rawlyk interviewed non-profit environmental organizations from three prairie provinces to gain insight on the nature of climate change discourse and better understand how to spur climate action. Rawlyk and Willness are currently pursuing publication with the work and Rawlyk hopes to continue applying a marketing lens to the study of global climate governance at Balsillie.

Beyond her own research, Rawlyk has held positions as a research assistant for Dr. Willness, teaching assistant for undergraduate courses at Edwards, and numerous leadership roles including being a student ambassador for the college and an executive on the student council. In her role as VP Student Life on the Edwards Business Students’ Society (2022-2023), Rawlyk lead a team of eleven directors to plan and execute a year of events that garnered thousands of attendees and achieved five-figure profits to fund other student initiatives. In this time, Rawlyk also competed on Edwards’ JDC West case competition team as an international business delegate (2020-2022) and held multiple other event planning roles. Between semesters, Rawlyk completed three different internships in marketing at a range of businesses local to Saskatoon which informs her knowledge of the corporate world. Outside of school and work, she enjoys celebrating her Ukrainian heritage through dance and volunteers as a social media director for Evolutzia Ukrainian Dance Inc.

At the BSIA, Rawlyk looks forward to completing SSHRC-funded research that meaningfully advances global climate governance. She aspires to spark productive conversations about climate change and encourage action from both the public and private sector.
